UMVOTI Karate Academy hosted the very successful KZN youth karate tournament over the weekend of April 7 and fittingly was the top team with the most winners.
A total of 279 entrants took part from different districts and four KZN universities together with their supporters brought many to the town for the weekend.
Sensei Sbonelo Mkhize, the General Secretary of IKO Kyokushinkaikan of KZN, who led the academy team worked closely with the parents of those in the academy team.
Congratulations to all on winning 14 trophies and on being the top team with the most winners.
Prior to the tournament, Umvoti Academy had prepared themselves at a camp from April 1 to 6 conducted by Sensei Mkhize together with his student Senpai Lungisani Mabaso. He has adopted Japanese and Russian techniques being used for teams working towards being part of the 2020 Olympic games in Japan.
Grading took place at the camp which was hosted at Greytown Junior School. Sensei Mkhize said they were all very appreciative of the support from the school, the school management and the lady who cooked meals for them.
Also appreciated, is the hard work of Mr L. Mngadi as sport officer who by working together with karate tournament organisers, ensured all went smoothly and successfully. The academy and all those involved in the tournament expressed their appreciation for the sponsorships and assistance from Everfit Gym, EMRS Greytown, Vees Breakdown, Impala Tavern, Umvoti Municipality, Greytown Welfare, Vishan Harrichand, Ikhwezi FM, Greytown Junior School and all those who came along to watch and support.
The Umvoti winning team will be taking part in the KZN Kyokushinkaikan Karate trials tournament on May 11 and 12 where selection will take place for the All Africa Continental Tournament to be held in Cape Town in July.
