‘We were denied access to the induction event’

AS the community of Umvoti and Ward 7 in particular, we are very disappointed in the way the ANC have decided to operate.

The Umvoti municipal manager, who claims to be a pro-ANC democrat, deliberately denied Ward 7 people the right to be present when their councillor [PG Mavundla] was sworn in on September 5. Ward 7 people have been fatherless from February up until [recently] as they did not have a councillor.

They have been suffering as they were being suffocated by those in power. Imagine how much they wanted to witness the occasion involving someone who they pin their hopes on, but, as I have already mentioned, the learned Madam decided (or was told) to deny us our right.

The municipal manager did not invite the people of Ward 7 and beyond as we believe she would have invited them to be part of the occasion in the local newspaper and not call a special meeting like she did. This will be supported by what I witnessed at the council chamber when the ruling party requested five minutes for caucus. She went out with them, which raised the question of if she is always part of the ANC caucus and maybe, in their previous caucus, she was told not to invite us because we did not vote for the ANC.

To our surprise, those who were fortunate to have known about the event were denied entry into the council chamber. And, it did not end there. They were forcefully taken off the municipal premises by the Public Order Police.

God knows who called those police and gave them the instruction to victimise our people like that.

It is now evident that the municipal manager does not practise impartiality when it comes to the treatment of staff. I say this referring to what happened to the secretary of eNhlalakahle Development Committee, Delani Mzolo, who did not get his salary for August because he campaigned for the NFP in the by-election. Immediately after the NFP won the by-election, they quickly went and stopped our secretary’s salary. Up until now he has not got his salary. His family is [starving] and his accounts are not paid.

When the municipal manager was approached about this, she responded by saying that Mzolo’s line manager is on sick leave and therefore there’s nothing she can do. The manager’s statement is confusing because the very same manager, Mr Qwabe, who is on leave, is the one who signed and submitted our secretary’s hours to the department responsible for employee’s salaries.

Qwabe is now perceived as a person who is being used to suffocate Mzolo because he first submitted the hours. Subsequently, a letter of stopping Mzolo’s salary came out that was signed by Municipal Manager Ngiba, Human Resource Manager Maphanga and, surprisingly, by Qwabe as well. We seem to be living in the Banana Municipality because, if it is not so, this should not have happened. Hence, we say corrective measures must be applied in this regard.
