Fire prompts second disaster declaration

KOUGA’S political leadership worked closely with fire and disaster management teams from the municipality, Working on Fire, Longmore MTO and communities to extinguish and minimise the impact of a runaway fire in the Thornhill/Longmore areas from 7 to 23 June 2017.

Sadly two lives were lost. Some 27 000 ha of farm land and plantation was destroyed, as well as farm buildings and equipment.

Residents from the Longmore Village and nearby farms had to be evacuated to the Thornhill Community Hall, where they were provided with food, mattresses, blankets and toiletries.

The municipality ran a massive campaign for donations to assist affected communities and fire teams working on the ground. We received tremendous support, not only from local communities but from across the country.

The Longmore Village was further left without electricity or running water for a number of weeks due to fire damage to the infrastructure. Kouga Municipality brought in a generator and mobile toilets to assist the community during this crisis time. Water was also delivered by truck.

The Kouga Council declared a local state of disaster on 12 June 2017 due to the fire damage.
