SPECIALISING in authentic Indian cuisine, Spicy Indian officially opened its doors on Saturday to the delight of Pietermaritzburg (PMB) residents looking for a mixture of north and south Indian delicacies.

Durban businessman Strini Naidoo said he chose PMB to launch Spicy Indian because he had always wanted to open a restaurant here and because he wanted to have the opportunity to establish an Indian restaurant to compete with the largely established chain fast food restaurants like Nandos and Spur.

“I want Indian food to stand side by side with the big restaurants. Curry is loved by everyone, not only Indians,” said Naidoo.

Naidoo said that he chose Liberty Midlands Mall because it is the food hub of PMB and PMB because it is the capital of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

With walls of sky blue surrounding the inside, Naidoo specifically selected a wallpaper amongst the sky blue highlighting pictures of the indentured labourers who were brought on the ships to work on the sugar cane plantations in KZN to immerse his restaurant in culture.

“I wanted to create a different atmosphere here for my customers so that when they leave they are left with a different experience to that of any other restaurant and are transported back in time, invoking feelings and thoughts,” said Naidoo.

Naidoo said that his restaurant offered value for money and a unique taste experience and added that he would also be opening Spicy Indian in Escourt and Newcastle.
