PIETERMARITZBURG saw a remarkable decrease in reported crime during the last festive season.
That’s according to Mgungundlovu South Cluster police spokesperson Sergeant Mthokozisi Ngobese, who said he was proud to say that for a change there had been a significant decrease in both serious and petty crime over the festive season.
“Even though there were a number of incidents reported, there was definitely a decrease in the overall crime rate during the last festive season,” he said.
Ngobese said the strategies implemented by Cluster Commander Phumelele Makhoba “worked wonders”.
According to Ngobese these strategies included an increase in police visibility in numerous parts of the city as well as operations such as road blocks and stop and searches.
Plessislaer police spokesperson Captain Musa Ntombela said his area also saw a decrease in crime during the last festive season. Ntombela attributes the reduction in crime to the strategies that were implemented.
These strategies included an increase in police patrols.
“Most of the patrols took place at night as most crime happens at night,” Ntombela said. More members were also added to the crime prevention units which operate 24 hours a day.
Ntombela said sector policing was also implemented and played a great role in the reduction of crime.
