THE Pietermaritzburg Children’s Home (PCH) assembled volunteers and business leaders on Mandela Day to raise funds for the organisation and create awareness about the home and its services.
PCH’s fourth Mandela Day campaign, the theme of which is, “we’re on the streets so the children don’t have to be”, was initiated by BEE Novation in 2013.
The campaign gives people a “taste” of what living on the street is like. They have to brave 67 minutes of a cold winter morning to “beg” motorists for funds.
“This year, the initiative has grown and raised over R14 000, thanks to the generosity of motorists and the diligence of our volunteers.
“We wish to acknowledge the various companies and organisations that supported and participated in the campaign, which are BEE Novation, BSI Tax Consultants, Cargill Animal Nutrition, Christian Revival Church, DC Data, Varsity College PMB, Xtec PMB, Arrow Print, and Think Local.
“This year’s campaign was also attended by Ward 32 Councillor Shawn Adkins and the Miss Uniworld SA 2017 finalist and Denelle Ince, [who were] on the road,” said Christopher Mahadeo, the home PRO.
Managing director of BEE Novation and the originator of the project, Lee du Preez said: “We are very grateful to everyone who assisted, and look forward to growing the donations at next year’s Mandela Day so we can continue to support PCH in serving our children.
“In line with what Bill Gates stated at his Mandela Day lecture in Pretoria in 2016 about supporting youth development, we believe companies can better use B-BBEE to help reach the youth development goals promoted in Nelson Mandela’s vision for a brighter South Africa, by supporting organisations such as PCH, who serve those very children and youth through their programmes,” she said.
