MOST of us are familiar with its distinct silhouette on the horizon of Pietermaritzburg’s surrounding landscape but few of us have had the opportunity to get up close and explore KZN’s own Table Mountain.

The mountain, which is not normally accessible to the general public, is steeped in local folklore including tales of giant snakes and cannibals. It has served as a refuge for its community throughout history and is considered a sacred place.

Lovers of the outdoors will have an opportunity to discover Table Mountain this weekend on Sunday, January 13 at the Table Mountain Trail Run. With three different distances of 7km, 12km and 19km to choose from, the event caters for all ages, abilities and fitness levels.

Walkers are also welcome to stretch their legs over the two shorter distances, whilst the 19km will provide more of a challenge to the more intrepid trail warriors. Whichever distance you take on, the climb to the top will be well worth the effort as the sweeping views will exhilarate you.

Through the goodwill of Chief Mdluli and in partnership with the local community, KZN Trail Running is able to showcase this spectacular area for all trail enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

KZNTR have been staging trail run events here for the nearly 10 years and those who have taken part previously make sure they return year after year because it is such a special privilege to get out onto the mountain. Not only is it an area rich in cultural history, but it is also an ecological gem, featuring sinkholes, wetlands draining into waterfalls and sunken forests.

Just 30 minutes from Pietermaritzburg, the thrills don’t stop on the trail ... there will be top quality food and drinks on sale in the race village and fantastic lucky draw prizes up for grabs!

The KZNTR KidZone will also be action for children two years and older, who are too young to hit the trails with their parents.

It will certainly be a fun-filled morning out for the whole family. Pre-entries for the event close at noon on Friday, January 11 but on the day entries will be available.
