Community based organisation Porky’s People recently set up a campaign whereby they are raising funds, through donations-based crowdfunding platform Backabuddy, for Pietermaritzburg resident NiQi During.
Since the last report on During’s battle against cystic fibrosis in the Maritzburg Fever’s July 18 edition, During received the news that she will need to embark on a new phase of treatment sessions in order to help with her condition.
During has battled with cystic fibrosis since she was six-months-old and has undergone numerous treatments, being moved up and down from Pretoria to Pietermaritzburg for procedures.
Following a long wait, During received a new set of lungs after being on the donor list for over two years. Unfortunately, 10 months after the surgery, her body started to reject the new organs.
“I was sent for an open lung biopsy that caused so many complications — my lungs collapsed and I landed up staying in hospital for 36 days, 21 of those days were spent in ICU.
“The biopsy results eventually came back and it was confirmed that I was in chronic rejection — my new lungs were no longer compatible with me,’ said During.
Having consulted with doctors in East Pretoria, During was told that the best way forward for now was to receive photopheresis treatment — a procedure that separates white and red blood cells and treats them with a photoactive drug that will hopefully slow down the rejection.
The campaign for During’s photopheresis treatment has thus far raised R 5 687.93, with contributions from over 300 donors.
“Battling a severe medical condition has interrupted what should be During’s most carefree years. We hope the public will support our BackaBuddy campaign to empower During as she continues her fight against cystic fibrosis” said Theresa Pienaar, founder of Porky’s People.
During is currently in Pretoria awaiting treatment.
It is estimated that she will need 24 sessions of photopheresis at a cost of R800 per a session.
