THE people who control the ANC, our “government within a government”, certainly got it right when they gave us you as a candidate for the post of mayor.
Regrettably, I have only had the privilege of meeting with you socially, and on very few occasions, but Chris, I have been so impressed by your humbleness, your striving for excellence and your caring for the well being of your fellow citizens, both wealthy and poor.
It must have been daunting taking over a municipality in a mess, but you have excelled and what a pity that those people have not recognised that your work is not complete and rewarded you with the opportunity of continuing with your task.
Your humble beginnings on a farm, where you went barefoot to school and learnt the disciplines of growing up in a rural environment and dirt poor, have stood all of us in good stead.
Your successor has big boots to fill. I wish him well and I also wish you well with your future career.
Please send me a copy of those memoirs, Trust no one, fear all.
If the truth is told, they should be very interesting reading.
I salute you.
