The price of potatoes has soared in the past few months. Just this month the average market price of a 10-kg bag of potatoes in South Africa (across all classes and markets) reached an eyewatering R83.
“Potatoes are akin to a staple in every household. Households have fixed budgets and if they cannot afford potatoes they almost always buy potatoes and sacrifice by excluding something else from their grocery list for that month,” said programme co-ordinator at the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group, Mervyn Abrahams, highlighting how important the crop is.
