MOUNTAIN Rise police conducted a number of crime prevention operations during the weekend to address and curb violent crimes from taking place.
Mountain Rise police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joshua Maistry said a blitz operation began on Friday, November 1 and carried on late Sunday evening, November 3, targeting hotspot areas and unlicensed liquor outlets that are contributing to serious crimes in the policing area. “A total of 50 arrests were made, protection orders, drunk driving, assault, GBH, breach of peace, dealing in liquor without a valid liquor licence, road traffic offences, possession of drugs and possession of ammunition,” said Maistry. Maistry added that during the first phase of the crime prevention operation, police members focused on stop and search operations as well as cordon and search which was very effective.
The second phase of the crime prevention operations focused on unlicensed liquor outlets in the informal settlements that were contributors to serious crimes. The Station Commander, Brigadier Boxer Pillay, stated that these types of operations positively result in the reduction of serious crimes in the hotspot areas.
He further went on to thank and appreciate the officers and members for the positive way in which the operations were conducted.
