THE date for this year’s reed dance has been set.
The annual event is set to take place on 9 September at the eNyokeni Palace, Nongoma.
In a statement yesterday, the KZN Department of Arts and Culture said it is anticipating thousands of maidens from all KZN districts, Swaziland, Mpumalanga and Gauteng to attend.
Maidens, who do not attend school, will present their reeds to Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini on Friday, 9 September and the rest of the girls the following day.
The king will deliver his main address on Saturday, 10 September.
The department said preparations were well under way.
“The department, and various stakeholders, use the event to educate young girls about the careers available to them as well as to discuss prevalent socials ills affecting the youth,” said the statement.
