Results expose crises in education

THE PAC acknowledges the 2015 matric results that were released by the Department of Basic Education, yesterday.

The results expose the inherent crises in our education system.

Firstly, they expose the fact that the divide between urban and rural schools is glaring - as seen in the pupils’ pass with university entrance, the infrastructural challenges experienced in rural areas, the bias of the academic content to urban social life and the colonial language as a medium of instruction which is unfamiliar to rural pupils.

Secondly, the more than 40% drop-out rate of pupils that started Grade 1 in 2004 is alarming.

This reflects the economic pressure that is felt by the youth of our country, who are forced to search for exploitative jobs before attaining the opportunity to achieve a matric.

Lastly is the glaring lack of future opportunities.

Nonetheless, the PAC congratulates the class of 2015 and their teachers for pressing on despite an education system that fails them.
