WOMEN’S Month started on a high note at Esther Payne Smith Secondary last Tuesday when the girls received a three-month supply of sanitary pads.

This is one of the Department of Education’s drives called “My life, my future”, where it distributes sanitary pads to schools who then distribute them to girls who come from underprivileged backgrounds.

The drive aims to keep girls at school during their menstruation time as some of them often miss school because they cannot afford sanitary pads.

Each girl received 10 packs of sanitary pad and the DoE will return and give them another three months’ supply.

The 2017 Miss India SA finalist, Mandira Gokul did the sanitary pad handover, who said it is important that women empower and build each other and help the girls.

“These girls are our future women - we need to help them.

“They will now be able to remain at school with confidence.”
