TUESDAY 26 July was St Charles College's official birthday, or their Founder's Day.
In 1875, St Charles Grammar School for Boys was founded by Bishop Charles Constant Jolivet, Bishop of Natal. For many years, the school campus was in central Pietermaritzburg. In 1913, the college was bought by the Marist brothers and in 1925 St Charles College moved to the new buildings in Harwin Road, Scottsville. In the early seventies, a board of governors was formed to assist in the management of the college and as the eighties approached, the college transitioned into a non-denominational Christian school.
In 1979, the entire college comprised 36 pupils, from Grade 1 to matric. Today there are over 800 boys. On the college’s birthday, Mrs du Toit’s Grade 3 pupils visited the Coach House to look at some of the college’s historical memorabilia items.
