AN award-winning exhibit that tells the history of Pietermaritzburg will be on display at the Tatham Art Gallery from 14 to 25 February.
A joint effort by members of the Maritzburg Philatelic Society, which was established in 1924, the exhibit follows the development of Pietermaritzburg from its Zulu start, to the early Voortrekkers, through the Victoria era into today’s vibrant city, the City of Choice with its renowned educational institutions and wide-ranging sporting events. Using a variety of mediums, the history, culture and personalities that have shaped this diverse community are displayed.
The exhibit is of considerable historical importance because it provides an insight into the past, present and future of Pietermaritzburg. The exhibition will benefit both art and history pupils. Lectures by the well-known exert on red-brick buildings, Dr Michael O’Connor, who is also a member of the Family History Society, will take place at 11am on Saturday, 18 February and Saturday, 25 February.
