Top achievers get computer training

A TOTAL of 30 Gobindlovu Comprehensive High School pupils went on a two-day e-Social Cohesion computer training course by the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services for being top achievers.

The pupils were selected from hundreds.

Deputy principal Bafana Mthembu welcomed Gender, Disability, Youth and Children chief director Petronella Linders and her team of trainers to the school.

“I am honoured to welcome you. Please do not­ feel at home, be at home,” said Mthembu.

Before training, pupils were asked why they were not allowed to bring cellphones to school and why there was no social cohesion in their communities.

Twenty-one year-old Gugulethu Ndlovu, a graduate from PC Training College, presented an interesting and informative lesson about how to tell a story using computer applications.

Pupils were introduced into PowerPoint, OfficeMix­, Moviemaker, Sway and other applications.

After the session, led by Gugulethu Ndlovu, a task to tell a story in five minutes was given to participants.

On the second day, an overview of careers in ICT and how learning computers will help in their career of choice and an hour of code online guided walk through, get your Hour of Code Certificate was presented.

Grades 8, 9 and 10 were divided into three groups and given opportunities to present their stories to all participants.

Pupils were then given a six-week task to submit to the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services so that they will qualify for a national competition.

The e-Social Cohesion computer training was facilitated by teachers including English subject head Bengs Nkosi and computer teachers­ Sindi Nkabini and Friendolina Khanyile­.
