United eye first win

MARITZBURG United defensive midfielder Miguel Timm has credited their early struggles in the Absa Premiership to lady luck.

After three outings in the Premiership, the Team of Choice are still without a victory and find themselves deep in the bottom half of the table with just two points from a possible nine.

Timm is hoping that their winless run will end tonight when they host the equally-struggling Black Leopards at Harry Gwala Stadium at 7.30 pm.

United head into the clash not only with the worrying factor of failing to win, but also not being sharp enough in front of goals.

The Eric Tinkler-coached outfit began with a 1-0 defeat to Golden Arrows, and then played a one-all draw with Highlands Park before being held to a goalless draw by top tier rookies Stellenbosch FC on Sunday.

Despite scoring only one goal, Timm believes the side will draw some confidence from the fact that they are creating chances and with a bit of luck they will find the back of the net and win games soon.

“The positive thing is we have been creating chances in the past two games, we need to continue doing the right things and also need that bit of luck in converting chances,” said Timm.

After the Leopards game, the Team of Choice will take a three-week break and return to action against Mamelodi Sundowns on September 21 away from home.

Timm believes it would be key for the Men in Blue to register their first win of the season before the break. “I mean it’s for our confidence at the end of the day, we would like to go to this break with four points this week [including the point from the draw against Stellies], at least,” said the player.

“The target was actually six points but obviously we will go for the four now. And we have three weeks to regroup and prepare for our next fixture [against Sundowns].” Leopards have fared even worse than United as they have managed just one point from the three matches they have played under their new coach, Lionel Soccoia.

Despite the horrible run by their opponents, Timm still believes they are a dangerous side with the quality of players they have signed for the season.

In the current transfer window period, Lidoda Duvha signed experienced campaigners such as Thabo Matlaba, Thuso Phala, Mogakolodi Ngele, Cuthbert Malajila and Siyabonga Zulu.

“We’ve seen that they have made a lot of signings, experienced players, so it’s not going to be easy but we are going into this game with confidence knowing that we are playing at home,” said Timm.
