MARITZBURG United have fallen on desperate times as they languish in the relegation zone after a disappointing 1-0 loss to SuperSport in a game where they would have desperately wanted to win.

The team of choice now sit in 15th position after Black Leopards won against AmaZulu.

United’s defence held on throughout the first half of the game, with Fadlu David’s men taking control of the encounter after the two sides had multiple efforts on goal in the opening 15 minutes of the game.

After a clear chance by SuperSport’s was spurned by Aubrey Modiba as he headed away from target, SuperSport were awarded a penalty on the hour mark and Modiba made up for his miss as he sent United’s keeper, Richard Ofori, the wrong way with 30 more minutes to play.

Captain Siyanda Xulu could have put his side back into the encounter in the 77th minute but headed just over the crossbar after a well-delivered set piece.

The Team of Choice’s search for a goal would prove futile after they threw bodies in search of an equaliser to no avail.

United’s managing director and chairperson Farook Kadodia said that their next will be a do-or-die game for coach Fadlu Davids and his technical staff as United take on Baroka FC at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday.
