A 24-year-old woman who stabbed her uncle in the neck with a broken bottle in Mpophomeni last year, killing him, was jailed for five years for culpable homicide this week.

Thandeka Waka’s sentence in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court follows a guilty plea in which she outlined what she had done. She said that on July 27, she was at home with her uncle, Bonkinkosi Waka (28), some family members and a few friends having fun.

They were all seated inside a rondavel around a fire, having a good time braaing and consuming alcohol.
