TWO Metro Police precincts have been officially opened in Motherwell and Humewood to assist in curbing crime in the city.
The precincts based at the Motherwell Thusong Centre in Motherwell and Brooks Pavilion in Humewood respectively, are already fully operational. According to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor, Mongameli Bobani, the opening of the two stations could not have come at a better time.
“I cannot think of a better way to conclude 2018 than launching two Metro Police satellite offices. And this is the perfect time of the year for that, as we all know crime usually increases during the festive season. We are now in the heart of Motherwell and will be able to fight crime from inside the community,” Bobani said.
The Metro Police have three core functions, namely road traffic policing, crime prevention and by-law enforcement.
Bobani said that building a township economy that creates jobs, starts with making the townships safe for local and foreign investors.
“This is serious business. Criminals and people who do not respect by-laws must be warned that their time is over,” Bobani said.
According to the Metro Police Chief, Yolande Faro, the number of officers deployed in both precincts is sufficient for now.
“The officers will work on the ground with the South African Police Service (SAPS),” she said.
Faro said that the Metro Police officers will quickly and effectively respond to calls as they are in the heart of the community.
“They will no longer have to travel long distances and that means that there will be less time for criminals to escape as the Metro Police and SAPS will be able to deploy swiftly,” said Faro.
The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security, Litho Suka, said that this would also ensure that by-laws such as the one governing illegal dumping would be dealt with.
“Our townships are full of rubbish. People dump illegally thinking that there will be no repercussions,” said Suka.
Faro also added that they would like to open satellite offices in every ward if allowed by the budget.
