Another train on Metrorail’s southern line has been set alight on Monday, this time at Steenberg station.
According to the City's fire services spokesperson Theo Layne, 16 fire fighters reported to the scene.
“The City’s Fire and Rescue Service responded to a train alight at Steenberg railway station at 14:55 this afternoon. Currently two railway coaches are burning. No injuries have been reported and the cause has not been determined as yet,” he says.
Two fire engines, two water tankers and a rescue vehicle are on scene.
This is the third incident involving burning carriages on a Metrorail train on the Cape Flats line after a burning train claimed the life of a woman at Ottery station nearly three weeks ago, while another train arrived at Retreat Station alight a week prior to that incident.
Anyone with information or footage of the event is requested to provide this to police. All reports will be investigated and treated in the strictest confidence. Rewards of up to R25 000 are payable for information leading to successful convictions.
