From 1 July, the City of Cape Town’s service tariffs were adjusted in light of our operational realities and priorities and in an effort to address the changing needs of our city.
This was done with due consideration of the realities that our residents face. The great majority of tariff increases for City services, however, are close to or within the inflation range.
The final prepaid electricity tariff migration was also completed as we had to ensure that only those customers who are financially vulnerable qualify for subsidisation by the rest of the customer base.
With adjustments, the issue of affordability is always key. We therefore advise our consumers that they should purchase only the amount of electricity that they need during a given month and not buy in bulk as it is not cheaper. The more units that are bought in total per month, the higher the unit cost will be on average as the consumer will move into the higher tariff block. It doesn’t matter how the purchases are split up in the month as all accumulate towards the monthly total.
It therefore always pays to save electricity.
