Caring for those with anxiety

The Ocean View Care Centre will be offering free counselling for any community members who are battling with trauma or anxiety.

Centre co-founder Johann Kikillus says due to serval murders and shootings taking place in the neighbourhood over the last few months, he has seen an increase in trauma amongst residents.

Community members have estimated that around 70 people have been killed in drug and gang-related violence in Ocean View since the start of last year (“Cops silent on murders,” People’s Post, 6 June).

“I have spent the past two weeks speaking with many adults and children in Ocean View who have indicated that they are very scared, traumatised and even ‘paralysed’ by the almost daily shootings,” Kikillus says.

“I had an elderly lady come and see me who was visibly shaken. She says that almost every night there is shooting outside her flat window and she is too scared to sleep.

“What was really sad to hear was that she said that since she was forcibly removed to Ocean View from Simon’s Town, she has never been so scared.”

Residents have reported feeling unsafe going to their church services, libraries and even school meetings in the evenings.

They are also “terrified walking to the taxi ranks and bus stops”, says Kikillus.

The free counselling will take place on Tuesday mornings at the care centre.

Appointments can be made at the care centre and there is no charge for the service.

“It has become clear that the biggest priority now is helping people deal with the violence that has been going on over the past few years as it is having a negative effect on their daily lives,” says Kikillus.
