Young people from a local karate club in Westridge donated food and clothing to children in Tafelsig as part of giving back during Youth Month.
The donation was made by the Kyokushin Karate Club to the NEAD development organisation in Tafelsig.
Sensei Trevor Rustin explains they wanted the youth to make a meaningful contribution by giving back. “In Mitchell’s Plain you have a situation where some children have and others don’t. And these are the kids who many a times do not have food to eat. With this initiative we want to develop a culture of giving in Mitchell’s Plain. The clothes that were donated also include school shoes and we want to thank the parents,” he says.
Joanie Fredericks, a director of NEAD, said she was deeply moved by the donation.
“As an organisation we want to instil fierce pride in our children. We teach them to pay it forward and also to look after each other. I want to say thank you very much,” she says.
“With this group we want to show people what is possible. These children are so talented and I enjoy working with them. When they are not busy practising dancing we also help them with their homework after school as well as provide them with a meal. Many times there is no food at home for the children getting back after school.”
