It does not matter how old you are, it’s a never-say-die attitude that counts if you really want to make a difference.
This was once again proven by the nominations received for this year’s People’s Post Spec-Savers Community Champions Elders Awards.
The finalists have been chosen. The oldest finalist in this year’s competition is only 91 years old.
Some of the projects through which these awesome elders are actively making a difference in society include a boxing club for the youth, knitting projects, feeding schemes and soup kitchens, an alien-hacking project and elderly people risking their lives in gang-infested suburbs.
This year’s finalists are:
. Sarah Daniels (77) from Bridgetown, Athlone
. Sheraaz Maarman (74) from Lavistown, Bishop Lavis
. Jo Maxwell (79) from Pinelands
. Shelmerdene de Gersigny (83) from Rosebank
. Arnold Hendricks (83) from Steenberg
. Mavis Frew (91) from Durbanville
This year’s winners will be announced at a special high tea on 30 September, the day before International Older Persons Day.
