Mandela Day was celebrated a little differently in Tafelsig this year.

Local community worker Sulyman Stellenboom organised a morning full of activities at the Tusong Centre on Tuesday last week for around 500 children from the area with the goal of educating them on the significance of the day.

From 10:00 to 14:00, children and their parents were fed and enjoyed activities, entertainment and sports before a special screening of a documentary.

Stellenboom had arranged a screening of Action Kommandant: The Untold Story of a Guerrilla, the movie based on the life of Ashley Kriel.

“This was the first time the movie has been screened in Mitchell’s Plain. It has been played all over the world,” said Stellenboom on the day.

“I want to educate the children on the struggle in the Western Cape and about who Madiba was and what he stood for.”
