A dance group who practiced their dance moves in the lounge and performed in the streets of Pelican Park are now winning medals and trophies.
The Outcast Dance Group is made up of 31 dancers from the community aged nine to 16.
Since the dance group was established in January this year, they have worked very hard to polish their dance moves and win medals at competitions.
Frank Davids, the manager of the group, says the dancers mostly do hip-hop, R&B and spiritual dancing. Davids says the group is doing great and received medals last month at the South African Dance Foundation Western Cape Challenge.
According to Davids, the group was formed because some of the dancers didn’t have access to activities to keep them busy. “This dance group is really useful to them because it shows that they are capable of doing something.”
Davids says this has also had a positive impact on the community. He says some of them had this idea that they are “nothing” but this dance group just proves that they can become something.
“These dancers are the change in the community.”
