Princess Vlei Forum and all those interested in the development of Princess Vlei celebrated the completion of the first phase of projects at the vlei on Saturday.

The event was also used to launch the next phase of projects at the vlei. Those who attended planted indigenous vegetation and did a cleanup.

JP Smith, Mayco member for safety, security and social services, gave the keynote address. Other speakers were Gary Stewart, deputy chairperson of the Princess Vlei Forum, who spoke about the project’s history and future plans, and Eddie Andrews, Mayco member (South).

Botanist Stuart Hall took all those interested on a guided botanical walk around the vlei.

Ward councillor Kevin Southgate says he is grateful to everyone who attended and contributed to the successful launch of the Princess Vlei park development.

“The attendance was a good reflection of the interest shown by the community in the project. It was encouraging to see both old and young participating in the planting and cleaning before the event.

“The completion of the first phase was made possible through an initial investment by the City of Cape Town of R1m, which included R175 000 from the councillor’s ward allocation budget. A further amount of R250 000 has been allocated in the current financial year from the ward allocation budget for the next phase of development,” says Southgate.

The project was also given a boost with the appointment of two extra staff members who will be sponsored by funds raised.

“Special thanks to the Princess Vlei Forum for their commitment to the project. Thank you also to Smith, Andrews and councillor Stuart Diamond who attended the event and gave the project their support.

“The first phase forms part the ‘people’s plan’ for the Princess Vlei park to be developed into a community recreational facility that will highlight the cultural and heritage significance of the vlei. I would like to encourage the community to continue to take ownership and responsibility for the park that can serve for generations to come,” says Southgate.
