Clovelly’s latest celebrity may fit into a tea cup, but that hasn’t stopped him having a big impact.
Harry the teacup pig recently joined the home of Jenna and Denzil Wait and has been causing quite a stir.
“Driving home we thought that this was going to be a breeze raising a miniature pig. Boy, oh boy, were we wrong!” Jenna says.
Harry has a lot of personality and a big attitude.
“Since getting Harry, we turned into full-time parents with a newly born ‘four-year-old’. Pigs are ranked the fourth most intelligent animals behind chimps, dolphins and elephants. Their cognitive ability is that of a 4-year-old child.
The Waits household found themselves in the middle of potty training, sleeping patterns – Harry needs an afternoon nap or he becomes one grumpy pig – and a squealing pig that is trying to communicate with over 20 vocalisations.
“We quickly learned that this oink means ‘I’m cold’, and this squeak means ‘I need the loo’ and this squeal means ‘rub my belly’,” Jenna says.
A very active animal, Harry goes for a walk around Clovelly every second day. And when rainy days put a damper on his walks, Jenna has to find toys and treats to keep him busy or he opens cupboards, pushes over pots, pulls pillows and duvets around the house or raids the pantry.
Aside from his walks and naps, Harry loves rooting in the garden and a good snack of popcorn or grapes (his two personal favourites). He just loves belly rubs and playing rough with Denzil.
And Harry’s quite the fashion fundi too.
“He squeals when he doesn’t have his jersey on and LOVES to look great. He is very bossy and wants things his way,” Jenna says.
Harry even gave back to his community on Mandela Day, with Harry and the Waits collecting garbage during his walk.
The trio have plans to join the Clovelly community in future clean-ups, but will have to wait for Harry to learn to socialise with smaller groups before he can cope with a busy environment.
