Helping officers go the extra mile

A new flatbed trailer will be operational from next month via a combined ward allocation budget from wards 115 and 77.

This will enable Law Enforcement teams to conduct more regular clean-ups at hotspots that experience high levels of rough sleeping, explains ward 115 counsellor Dave Bryant.

Currently, these operations are conducted on a weekly basis and trailers have to be brought in from elsewhere.

Bryant says: “The key challenges relating to rough sleeping cannot be solved by enforcement alone and we have to keep focused on helping people into safe spaces. That said, Law Enforcement still plays a key role and one of the main issues that has been identified has been the large amount of waste material left behind in rough-sleeping areas after operations.”

Ward 77 counsellor Brandon Golding adds: “I have spent a great deal of time liaising with our regular Law Enforcement officers on the ground who are at the coalface of operations. They advised that the absence of a trailer was hampering their ability to manage hotspots effectively. I am very pleased that between Bryant and myself we have managed to assist our hardworking officers by providing this trailer.”

The trailer will be operated by local Law Enforcement staff in collaboration with staff from the Solid Waste Management Department.
