Hangberg sport field was abuzz with activity as learners gathered for the launch of a learner incentive programme on Friday 20 January.
Grade 8 and Grade 9 learners from Silikamva and Hout Bay high schools attended the launch which is an initiative by the Hout Bay Partnership in collaboration with the DG Murray Trust and provincial government’s After School Game Changer programme.
They will organise after-school activities on and off schoolgrounds on weekdays and weekends.
Ashley Newell, Hout Bay partnership project coordinator, says the learner incentive programme was created to help keep children in school by encouraging them to participate in after-school activities.
“The programme looks to reinforce academic performance and positive social behaviour by creating partnerships across the schools and organisations in Hout Bay to maximise opportunities and address socio-economic challenges faced by some learners. A diverse range of after-school offerings from arts and culture, sports and recreation, life skills and environmental programmes and academic support are in place at both schools to ensure every learner can access the additional support or interest activity that suits him,” she says.
For now only the Grade 8 and 9 learners can attend as it is a trial programme.
“At the end of each term the learners will be awarded prizes in different categories based on the number of sessions they have participated in,” says Newell.
On the day of the launch learners were entertained by Peter Michaels who performed magic tricks and gave out participation prizes.
Abraham Oliver, manager of the False Bay Centre for Entrepreneurship, who grew up in Hangberg, gave a short motivational speech.
The launch included performances by Harvest Youth Project dancing groups and a Broadway/contemporary routine by the Amoyo Performing Arts Foundation.
Sandwiches, fruit and juice, sponsored in part by Hout Bay Pick n Pay, were handed out after a long day of learning, dancing, singing, laughing and a lot of sun.
Newell says they believe this is what their area needs.
