A 27-year-old man was arrested by the police’s k9 unit and national intervention unit after a 9mm pistol, a magazine and 15 rounds of ammunition were found in his possession.

The arrest was made on Wednesday 7 August in Grasmere Street, Athlone.

Officers responded to a complaint about an armed robbery. When they arrived at the address, several suspects tried to evade the police, but one was apprehended on a field close to the N2.

He has appeared in the Athlone magistrate’s court on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
