The man who owns the ground on which Egoli informal settlement in Philippi lies says he does not want the squatters’ leadership knocking on his door.

The residents’ fight for municipal services and land in the area has been going on for more than 30 years (“Ignored by officials”, People’s Post, 18 July).

“I am not interested in speaking to the leadership of Egoli. These people cannot be trusted. They have a one track mind and want to make decisions on my property,” says land owner Cassiem Alexander.

“I have personally visited Abraham ‘Abe’ Fransman who is known to be the leadership head, and he is not a man of his word. I have asked him way back to give me a portion of my ground in order for us to get started on their request for better services. He keeps agreeing, then changes his mind soon after. I am not prepared to speak to them any longer, for I have spoken enough,” he says.

Alexander says he prefers speaking to the ward councillor.

“’Til then, it is either that or they need to get a new committee to sit around the table with us to discuss this issue, but I will not speak to them at all. I have spoken enough and they need to understand.”
