Artisans from Mitchell’s Plain and Strandfontein could soon have a market to showcase their talents.
Mario Oorstendurp says he hosted a mini-market in Strandfontein in December. The interest in and support for the market led to the “Made in Mitchell’s Plain” initiative.
“We are bursting with talent. However, in many cases these talents are not being exposed further than the boundaries of Mitchell’s Plain and Strandfontein,” he says.
“I have identified the huge creative talent we have and the need to recognise and promote the talents of our local artists, crafters and designers.”
The initiative aims to become the benchmark of local arts, crafts and design, showcasing and marketing the biggest display of arts, crafts and design made by residents.
“‘Made in Mitchell’s Plain’ specifically targets creatives within the greater Mitchell’s Plain and Strandfontein area, however, we will not turn away creatives who offer a unique product, especially where no platform is available,” says Oorstendurp.
All items must be handmade by the artist, finished to a high standard, tagged and presented well and suitable for sale. To apply, email or WhatsApp a high resolution image of the products against a plain background for promotional purposes, provide a short description about what your items are made of and provide all of your contact details, including business name and label and social media and web platforms.
“Interest in the initial stage has been good. Sketch artists, embroiderers, graphic, clothing manufacturers/designers and jewellery manufacturers responded,” he says.
He hopes to launch the market by March.
“The market will initially be self funded through the collection of vendor/exhibition fees until corporate or other possible sponsors are able to assist. All service providers and support such as security, medical, catering and others will be sourced locally,” he says.
