Sharedon Park neighbourhood watch members are happy that they finally received accreditation.

Sharedon Park Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) members are over the moon since they received their accreditation last week Wednesday.

At an event hosted by the department of community safety, Sharedon Park NHW was one of 20 neighbourhood watches that were accredited at a ceremony in Kraaifontein.

Southern Eye NHW was also accredited at this ceremony.

Being an accredited NHW comes with many benefits and Eugene Taylor, chairperson of the Sharedon Park NHW, is happy that they have unlocked these benefits. “We have been trying for almost over a year to get our papers in order. The NHW has been on for years but with no accreditation. We are glad that we got accredited. It really means a lot to us and it means we can now step up our work in being the eyes and ears of the community.”

Dan Plato, provincial minister of community safety, officially awarded the accreditation at the event.

The 20 NHWs will add to the 73 NHW structures already accredited across the province since the start of the accreditation process last year. Another 35 NHW structures will be accredited this year.

“All the NHWs will receive their accreditation certificate and a starter kit, containing reflective vests, torches, safety whistles, first-aid kits, a fire extinguisher, strobe lights and magnetic decals for vehicles, stickers and a lockable container. The new accredited NHW will also be eligible for additional training provided by the department of community safety or our safety partners, on top of the basic NHW training and first-aid training they are receiving already,” says Plato.

Taylor says being accredited is a step in the right direction.

“This means we can fight crime even better in our areas because we will be having equipment. We are also an non-profit organisation so we can have businesses sponsor us. All we want is to be able to keep communities safe,” he says.

The suburbs the newly accredited NHWs serve include Somerset West, Sanddrift, Rylands, Wynberg, Surrey Estate, Tygerhof, Helderzicht, Monte Vista, Table View, Constantia, Highlands Village, Parow Valley, Rosebank and Wesbank.
