Workshops to educate Red Hill residents on nature conservation took place this past week.

The workshops, organised by subcouncil 19, included a walkabout in the suburb during which participants discussed organic gardening and recycling examples. The participants were also taught about what to harvest to ensure conservation of indigenous plants.

Subcouncil chairperson Felicity Purchase says the subcouncil arranges many educational workshops in disadvantaged communities.

“City of Cape Town departments such as water and sanitation, the fire department and nature conservation are invited to facilitate these workshops and educate community members on fire and life safety, preservation of our natural environment and the importance of saving water,” she says.

Community members are invited by the subcouncil office to attend the workshops, Purchase adds.

“The purpose of our educational workshops is to enlighten community members on the crucial issues that are occurring in our everyday lives, such as water restrictions and fires in our valley – seeing that we are prone to these – and nature conservation, as this is very important to everyone,” she says.

“We are hoping for our environment to be better taken care of by everyone who lives in our area. We would like people to appreciate and conserve our beautiful valley and to appreciate and look after what we have.”
