Locals unite against violence

Local organisations across Parkwood Estate united for a community meeting last Tuesday to plot the way forward in dealing with the ongoing violence in the area.

The gathering was arranged by Fuad Titus, chairperson of the Grassy Park Community Policing Forum (CPF), in collaboration with Paul Phillips from the Voice of Parkwood.
“It is clear that the many positive activities in the area are overshadowed by the violent actions of a few. Parkwood Estate has so much good going for it that we cannot allow the few bad people to dictate what happens in this community,” says Titus.

Those who attended the meeting agreed to harness the forces for good to bring about lasting change in the area. The community initiative follows the fatal shooting of seven-year-old Ezra Daniels two weeks ago. A peaceful prayer walk in response to this was held on Sunday 17 September.

It was agreed that while the community needs to address the gangs and drug problem, with emphasis placed on the positive work being done in the area. An appeal was made for the media to give more prominence to the good in the area.

Organisations involved in the community initiative include Foundation for Positive Change, Embrace Seniors, Reconciliation Ministries, Save a Child, Parkwood Community Choir, Dream Team and Moving Forward – all bringing positive inputs to the area. The initiative is supported by the ward councillor, William Akim. Other stakeholders in the area will also be drawn in such as the provincial and City departments of social development, the Housing Department, school principals and other faith-based organisations.

The next community meeting will be held on Wednesday 4 October. The venue will be confirmed shortly.
