The annual GreenSmile D&G Orient FC Youth Football Tournament kicks off at The Greens in Manenberg next weekend (27 to 29 April).
The tournament was launched last year and aims to reach greater heights in its second edition.
The GreenSmile Foundation, founded in 2012, is an NPO spearheaded by former South African rugby players of the year, Ashwin Willemse and Breyton Paulse.
The foundation seeks to help combat the social challenges being faced in South Africa.
According to D&G Orient FC’s CEO, Fadiel Gasant, the ethos of the foundation is primarily focused on three components: Sport, health and education.
“Our vision is to serve the community through various developmental initiatives such as creating employment initiatives, skills development and empowerment projects to alleviate poverty,” he says.
D&G Orient FC is embarking on an international tournament where they will be sending youth players on trial in Kuala Lumpur in September.
The Orient Marching Band, backed by Willemse, will be representing South Africa at the world championships next November.
“I am proud to be a part of this organisation as many changes have come about in the youth in this community,” says Willemse.
