Market to uplift local small businesses

A Kenwyn resident wants to uplift local small businesses and entrepreneurs by providing an equal opportunity to have a space to showcase their crafts and create awareness of their brands.

Lameez Nicholas will be hosting a Retailers Hub event in Wetton next month.

The 30-year-old, who currently works in the legal industry, started working on this project in January and said a lot of thought and research has gone into it.

Nicholas became in tune with her creative side two years ago and started selling luxury branded items at a market.

“I felt like this was the perfect time to put everything together and do this event,” she said.

The aim of the Retailers Hub is to provide exposure and to create awareness about different products and designs in the community, she added.

“I want everyone to succeed and have an amazing day. This event is so important because people are really passionate about their creations.”

“I want to create possibilities for small businesses in communities.”

Nicholas said it’s really a struggle for vendors to make a profit when they’re also paying for a space at a market.

“For example, an aunty who bakes brownies would pay R400 for a space at a market and most of the time she won’t make her money back.”

“This event is an effort to uplift all the entrepreneurs in the community. I want all the businesses to be successful. It’s tough out there for the aunty who bakes brownies,” she added.

Nicholas said this event is about interacting with people from the community and allowing entrepreneurs to distribute their business cards to the other residents in the community. It is open to everyone and is not limited to a certain age.

“I want the grannies to come and buy a koesister from the aunty,” she added

Nicholas hopes this event will foster relationships between families, communities and create bonds among vendors.

“I am excited about this project as a lot of effort has gone into this event.”

Nicholas said she hopes this event will be a success so that it could become an annual event for the community.

It will take place on Sunday 1 September at the Ambiance Lifestyle Venue, ERF501 High Road, Turfhall Estate in Wetton.
