The 2018 edition of the Mossel Bay Race, a 210 nautical mile off-shore challenge, was a true challenge.

It started from Simon’s Town at 09:00 sharp on Thursday 27 September.

The rainy conditions with a strong northerly blow allowed spinnakers to be raised immediately. The forecast for the race was that the winds would be north-westerly for the duration, making a new record a distinct possibility. This was looking promising with Radio Holland Gryphon rounding Cape Agulhas at 16:57.

Unfortunately they chose a more inshore route and had to tack offshore again to find heavier winds causing them to lose significant time. They also suffered some damage to their mainsail, but in spite of all this, managed to just miss the race record of 21:23:59s set by Nitro last year by a mere 30 minutes.

Raymarine Regardless followed Radio Holland Gryphon into Mossel Bay with just three minutes separating them. The final results on handicap were revealed at the prize-giving on Friday 5 October.

Tragically, at 19:30 on Thursday 27 September, Silver Girl was hit by a rogue wave resulting in the loss of their skipper, Melvin Rautenbach. The Race Committee, False Bay Yacht Club, Mossel Bay Yacht and Boat Club and the crew of all participating yachts extend their deepest sympathies to his family, friends and crew.
