One of the firearms confiscated during the police’s festive season operations.
It was a good start to the festive season for
police throughout the Mitchell’s Plain policing cluster when they started their
holiday cheer with more than 600 arrests.
Starting on Sunday 13 December officers in the cluster – comprising
Lansdowne, Mitchell’s Plain, Strandfontein, Steenberg, Grassy Park, Lentegeur
and Athlone police stations – arrested 648 suspects for crimes including the
possession of illegal firearms, ammunition and drugs.
During the week leading up to 20 December, police confiscated six
firearms and various amounts of ammunition, and had some good arrests for
Seven tracing operations were also conducted in the cluster that
led to the arrest of the suspects.
A total of 112 houses were searched for drugs, during which 248
suspects were arrested.
Drugs confiscated include 179 heroin units, 365 packets of tik, 189
mandrax tablets and 1kg dagga.
From Friday 18 to Friday 25 December, police arrested a further 240
suspects during crime prevention operations.
In another combined police operation held in the early hours of the
Thursday morning, police made several arrests and confiscations in Mitchell’s
Focusing on guns, drugs, gangs and tracing wanted suspects, the
operation forms part of Operation Fiyela and was focused on Tafelsig and Beacon
At 05:35 the members carried out a search warrant at a house in
Cricket Street, Beacon Valley.
They recovered a CZ 75 Luger 9mm pistol with a magazine and 23
rounds of ammunition.
A 35-year-old man was arrested on charges relating to the
possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
In another search, at about 06:50, at a house in Dolomites
Crescent, Tafelsig officers confiscated a Z88 9mm pistol with a magazine and
four rounds of ammunition.
A 53-year-old woman was arrested.
Other successes of the operation include the searching of 30
premises, 102 vehicles and 142 persons.
Four vehicle checkpoints were held. Traffic fines to the value of
R15 000 were issued.
An additional 16 suspects were arrested in separate cases of
possession of dagga, mandrax, unlicensed firearms and ammunition and
A total of 94 tik packets, one tik lolly, one mandrax tablet and 41
stoppe dagga were confiscated.
