Baden Powell Drive has been reopened to traffic temporarily following the completion of preparation work.
Initially the road was reduced to a one-way road, with right of way to traffic heading in the direction of Mitchell’s Plain (from Somerset West). Although the roadworks signage remains displayed along all access routes to the road, the road is open to traffic.
Eddie Andrews, Mayco member (South), says the roadworks contract has not been suspended and work continues.
“The contractor has completed the preparatory work in the lanes on Baden Powell Drive. Therefore, the deviation has been temporarily lifted. The deviation signs have been temporarily removed, but the other signs remain in place as construction work is progressing on the shoulders of the road,” says Andrews.
The resurfacing and repair of about 16.5km of the road between Khayelitsha and Mitchell’s Plain are said to cost an estimated R29m.
The roadworks are still set to be completed in November as initially planned.
“The final road surfacing will be applied in September or October. When this work commences, eastbound traffic on Baden Powell Drive will again be diverted though Spine Road,” says Andrews.
