Hundreds of locals attended a special health and wellness session at the Lentegeur Civic Centre on Thursday last week.

The health awareness session from 10:00 to 14:00 was hosted by ward 76 councillor Goawa Timm.

The event featured free blood pressure, blood glucose, weight and diabetes testing.

The event was sponsored in part by ward allocation funding.

Home-based carers, also funded through the ward allocation budget for the seniors in ward 76, also helped by giving massages to the seniors who attended.

The home-based carers will be active for the next four months.

Timm says she hopes to make it an annual event.

“There are many seniors who are frail and vulnerable in my ward and they will go door to door to care for them,” says Timm.

The Mzanzi Ethical Research Centre were also on board, testing for various ailments. Their goal was to register people for a database that could see them being part of medical trials around the world, should they meet specific requirements. For this, their medication, conditions and personal information was recorded.

Representatives of Virgin Active and the City of Cape Town’s social development department were also present to help with tests and give talks on health and wellness.
