Spotlight on health, safety

Encouraging residents to take steps toward improving their health and safety is the key goal of an expo set to take place this weekend.

Hosted by the Cape Flats YMCA, the free Health and Safety Expo will take place on Saturday 6 October at the Rehoboth Community Life Centre in Rocklands from 10:00.

Berenice Roman of the YMCA says special guest speakers will also be at the event.

Organisations and entities present will include the police, Fire Department, Wolfgat Nature Reserve, Traffic, Law Enforcement, Mustadafin Foundation and local neighbourhood watches.

The YMCA wellness clinic will also be on site and testing will include free HIV testing. “We did a needs assessment in the community and saw the need for this. We wanted to empower young girls at risk,” says Roman.

“It is also a community project we wanted to do for a while. We decided to bring all the stakeholders together to show the community what help there is available for them.”

The expo will also deal with topical and important issues such as substance abuse.

“[We are calling on] all the community to let them know of the opportunities there are for them,” she says.
