Log leaders Beacon Hill High School were stopped in their tracks 2-0 by Strandfontein High School in a MRP Foundation league match on Saturday 20 August at Westridge High School’s sports grounds.
This ended Wilbur Beukes’ chargers unblemished record after nine weekends of competition.
The result has enabled the current standings to change at the top, which now sees Tafelsig High School in the number one spot with 23 points after nine matches – one point ahead of Beacon Hill (22 points) and a further three points ahead of third-placed Portland High School (20 points).
With six matches still to play in the MRP Foundation High Schools League the title race is on and the latest scenario indicates the championship race is going down to the wire.
Football can be cruel at times and though Wilbur Beukes and his Beacon Hill side were warned not to approach their challenge against the “Sea Robbers” lightly, the Strandfontein side scored twice with well-taken goals through Garin Jaftha and Ian Florus in the second half to send the opposition home.
Beacon Hill will have to pick up the pieces quickly and prepare for their top-of-the-table clash against Tafelsig on Saturday 27 August.
A second half hat-trick by Shane Paulse paved the way for Tafelsig to resurrect their way to the top of the table with an emphatic 3-0 win against the unpredictable Woodlands High School.
With the strikers of both Beacon Hill and Tafelsig having struggled in their last few games, it has been left mostly to their defenders to score and win games.
Much will depend on Keith October, Siraaj Williams, and Byron Swarts for Beacon Hill and these players know they will have to be at their best to beat an in-form Clayton du Plessis in goal.
Andrew Geldenhuys and his Tafelsig High squad are also aware they cannot take their foot off the gas and need to consolidate and cement their position at the top with a five-star performance. A slip-up this time may not see them get a second chance for a possible bite at the cherry.
With that in mind pressure will be on Emeraan Rayners, Chadwin Johnson and Denzil Dreyer to produce for a positive result which will be much to the delight of Tafelsig’s fans.
