Western Province Athletics partnered with the Mitchell’s Plain Titans athletic club to host a street athletics event in Glider Street, Beacon Valley on Wednesday.
Children from all over Mitchell’s Plain participated in the event that featured a variety of races for different age groups.
The free event was hosted to encourage athletics and participation in sport.
It was also supported by the Two Oceans Marathon.
Edmund Bird, coordinator of the event, says: “It was our second year taking athletics to the streets of Mitchell’s Plain and it is my dream and hope that this initiative will continue to give our children new hope and prosperity for their future.”
The afternoon’s events included a 25m toddlers’ trot and other distances, ranging from 50m to 400m, for children aged six to 17.
There were open calls for entries on the day that saw children participating in traditional and non-traditional running gear. Some of the organisers and marshalls also took to the street to run in friendly matches.
The event is the fifth street athletics installement hosted by Western Province Athletics in a series of community-focused events, in which local youngsters are invited to participate and compete against each other over short and medium distances.
