These parents don’t care

For the past few years I have consistently witnessed the extreme ignorance and carelessness of parents who drive with babies and other children on their laps, and this on traffic-congested roads.

Amazingly, some are the mothers themselves or the mother would be the left-side passenger.

As a former sector community policing subforum chairperson I have confronted such reckless parents who have no regard for their children’s safety nor those of other road users. Almost every time, I was insulted or the matter shrugged off.

The same with overcrowding of toddlers who are loaded into cars with seating for four or five. I have counted ten such children in one small sedan.

When did we stop being parents who care about our children?

How do we protect these tender children if the parents swear and insult those who show concern?

Seeing children on scooters and quad bikes has become normal in all communities as these children speed along on our roads with no inclination towards road safety. But when the child lies dead, the police and ambulance and rescue services become the problem – not the reckless disgraceful parents. How did we get to this point?

Metro Police, of course, are nowhere to be seen. Guess they’re too busy protecting tourists in Sea Point and Llandudno. We need them where this unfortunate behaviour against children occurs.
