A well-known tyre thief was arrested by Wynberg police on Saturday 18 June.
Wynberg police spokesperson Lieutenant Ntomboxolo Nqunqeka says two police officers were on patrol when they received a call to help them chase a white VW Polo Playa. “Constable Mukovhe Mulidi and Sergeant Michael Dlangudlangu were doing regular patrols when they received information about a car, driving from Hout Bay to Wynberg, full of tyres.
“Police tried to stop the suspects, but the vehicle did not stop and they chased it. The driver then decided to stop and jumped out and over the wall of the house,” she says.
Officers on the scene had to call for backup after the suspect was caught. He was detained at Wynberg Police Station.
“The suspect is known to be involved with the theft of wheels, and has previously been arrested for this. Wheel theft is becoming a major concern – especially in the Fish Hoek area.
“We would like to commend the commitment of the Constantia Watch Special Response Team for working hand-in-hand with the police in fighting crime, Diep River police for coordinating the chase and Fish Hoek Neighbourhood Watch for conducting the operations,” she says.
