FRIDAY the 13th is considered by some to be an unlucky day, but in Canada bikers changed this mindset and turned it into a day worth celebrating, calling it Friday the 13th Motor- cycle Rally.

Bikers on the South Coast have also adapted this approach and made it a bikers’ tradition to get together on the day and celebrate brotherhood and sisterhood, calling it Bikers’ Day

Last Friday bikers from various clubs gathered at Margate’s Village Tavern to enjoy music and drinks.

The event was hosted by Brian McCarthy, a former South Coast biker, but now living in Canada, who has been in the biking fraternity since the 1960s.

McCarthy said Friday the 13th Motorcycle Rally in Canada has been celebrated since the 1980s and attracts 250 000 bikers.

“On the South Coast its only the second year Bikers’ Day is celebrated.

“Last year it attracted 100 bikers riding from Johannesburg, Durban and neighbouring towns coming to Margate to celebrate with us,” said McCarthy.

He said they chose Margate because of the beautiful climate and feel that Margate is the “paradise” of SA.

Five bikers from Canada also attended the celebration saying it feels good to see that the Canadian way of celebrating this day is slowly shifting in.

The next Friday the 13th is in October and McCarthy has called on bikers to be part of a celebrations that will be held that day.
